(MRC) -- Last year"s overall imports of polyethylene (PE) into Ukraine increased by a quarter year on year to 266,600 tonnes. High density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) accounted for the greatest increase in shipments, according to MRC"s DataScope report.

December PE imports to Ukraine rose to 27,900 tonnes, despite seasonal factors, compared to 22,300 tonnes a month earlier. Some companies were actively building up additional inventories of material on the back of the outlook of a major price rise in January. Overall 2016 PE imports grew to 266,600 tonnes from 212,800 tonnes in 2015, demand for all PE grades increased, with HDPE and LLDPE accounting for the greatest growth in demand.

The supply structure by PE grades looked the following way over the stated period.

Last month"s HDPE imports to the Ukrainian market increased to 13,400 tonnes from 11,900 tonnes a month earlier. Some companies were actively replenishing additional inventories of film grade and blow moulding HDPE. Overall HDPE imports reached 126,000 tonnes last year, compared to 93,400 tonnes a year earlier, PE shipments to all consumption sectors increased.

December imports of low density polyethylene (LDPE) grew to 7,700 tonnes from 4,400 tonnes a month earlier. On the back of quite low prices in Russia and in the Middle East, some companies were actively building up LDPE inventories. Overall LDPE imports exceeded 68,200 tonnes over the stated period, up by 6% year on year.

Last month"s LLDPE imports were 5,800 tonnes, compared to 5,300 tonnes in November, some local stretch films producers increased their purchasing also under the pressure of expectations of a major price rise in January. Last year"s overall LLDPE imports into Ukraine rose to 58,800 tonnes from 45,000 tonnes a year earlier. Producers of film products and large items, produced by rotational moulding, accounted for the main increase in demand.

Imports of other PE grades, including ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA), totalled 13,600 tonnes over the stated period, compared to 9,900 tonnes a year earlier.
